Tuesday we return to Geneva, to an “our” apartment, after fifteen months of being truly nomads. Sometimes I ask myself if this is just the beginning of the next trip. Where?

Ter um modo de vida Suiço e, entre outros:

  • possuir uma conta bancaria;
  • ter uma mobilidade autonoma (ou seja, nao ter carro, usar apenas os transportes publicos);
  • pertencer a uma associacao local;
  • conhecer bem a sua regiao.

No caso da mobilidade autonoma, fique-se a saber que 45% das familias da capital Suica ou de Zurique nao teem carro. No total da Suica ha 20% das familias sem carro, das quais um terco o fazem voluntariamente.

The price of a tree

Today the last page of the newspaper was about the price of a tree. Switzerland is changing the way it calculates the price that, for instance, a insurance has to pay when a car damages a tree. Usually is the price of replacing with a similar tree, including the removal of the damaged tree, buying a new one, transport it (sometimes by helicopter!) and plant it.

Seems that in some cities in the US they calculate the price also based on the CO2 it saves and the theoretical improvement on the peoples lives and health and the savings the city does buy having trees.

This to say that a price of a tree can sometimes be in the order of 20 thousand swiss francs (13’000 euros).

Tentei compreender a vantagem de ter uma numeração complicada para um pais pequeno como Portugal: enviei um postal para uma morada sem especificar o nome da rua. Isto porque se formos ao site dos correios podemos ver que 2650-187 ALFORNELOS (sendo este Alfornelos ja redundante, mas usado para confirmar que e um codigo valido) corresponde apenas aos numero PARES da rua Maria Machado.
O postal, enviado no mesmo dia que um outro com outro endereço completo, ainda nao chegou (enquanto que com o endereço completo demorou apenas dois dias). Ja passaram quatro dias.

Depois de viajar pelo mundo, tento entender porque boas ideias de alguns paises nao sao usadas em outros. Simplificacao e um exemplo.

Enquanto a pagina dos CTT me diz que a morada completa bem formatada seria:
R MARIA MACHADO 2 – 10E
2650-187 ALFORNELOS

Eu gostaria de simplificar e ficar apenas com as partes importantes:
Ha uns anos escreviamos:
Rua Maria Machado, n. 2 – 10° E
Porque nao simplificar para:
M Machado 2 – 10E
nos casos em que nao ha mais que uma rua/largo/avenida/praca com o mesmo nome?

Por vezes me pergunto, muito inocentemente, que criterio é utilizado para colocar sinais de transito, qual o regulamento seguido e qual a educacao do responsavel que define o sinal e local a colocar.

News aggregator and summarizer

A function on the web I’m missing is a website that works as news aggregator (style of Google News) but at same time summarizes the news based on the last time I went to visit the page.

This means that if when traveling I visit the page weekly, it would only show me a top of the most important news of the week but not necessarily the latests neither the first ones about a topic.
Example, I visit the page 3 days after a big earthquake somewhere. It would have a link to a news where they talk about the earthquake and what was done in the last 3days.
Someone can create this?

Being a traveller in bureaucracy

No bureaucracy is ready for the traveler. Anything you’ll do when preparing your trip, like the medical insurance, asks what is your address. It’s mandatory to have one. Even when you just stop renting your apartment for traveling.

Same with the bank. I live everywhere of nowhere. Why my address can’t be only an email? Two of the few phone calls I got during this trip where from my bank to know how well they are serving me. Just horribly by making me paying for answering to their unknown number. I could reply a questionnaire if they would request me by e-mail.

Also, why national authorities can’t just have my e-mail as my “temporary” address? If I choose to give an email as address it would remove many rights as citizen, like the right to vote. It would remove my right to get an employment. And any necessary communication would come only by email. No more letters home thinking that I’ll be there, even if I said I will be traveling.

Once on return, to be able to get back to “normal” life you return to your full home address, whatever it is, an hotel room, a rented room or apartment.

Vias ciclaveis em Lisboa

Recebi em Tallin via Poste Restante da minha avo um artigo do DN sobre as faixas para bicicletas que planeiam contruir em Lisboa. O resultado… parece isto:

Os olhos sao as faixas existentes em Monsanto e as que vao contruir no Alto Lumiar e a boca e ao longo do Tejo…

Eu rio-me com este plano! Rio-me ainda mais quando a legenda diz para umas faixas: a serem feitas quando se terminar a CRIL. Entre linhas leio nunca. Ou leio, vamos planear planear (sim, repetido) faze-las.

Isto e o mapa de faixas em Viena, Austria (ruas em amarelo teem faixa na estrada e a vermelho sao faixas separadas para bicicletas). Basicamente tem duas circulares e varias linhas do exterior para o centro da cidade. A mim parece-me logico e simples de fazer o mesmo em Lisboa. Alias… penso que o desenho seria um pouco este:

Falta so a faixa de bicicletas que liga o aeroporto a Telheiras e Pontinha…

Sonho um dia ter um destes planos em Lisboa!
